Smart Kids Sensory Survival Kit – School Edition

The Smart Kids Sensory Survival Kit – School Edition contains the following helpful sensory tools, all in a securely-closing pencil box:

Fidgets
Help maintain focus by keeping hands busy while providing
tactile input.  The fidgets included in the kit are quiet and
appropriate for most classrooms.

Chewable Pencil Topper – Mint Flavor
Chewies are an effective alternative for children who like to bite on their clothes, fingers or other inappropriate objects while at the same time providing oral motor stimulation and input, which can help improve focus. Research suggests Mint in particular help encourage a focused state.

Grips Pencils
Specially designed triangular pencils with incorporated grips. Grips help with placement of fingers on pencils, reducing fatigue and providing tactile stimulation to improve writing.

Highlight Strip
The highlighter strip helps with visual tracking while reading.  Reading is so much easier when you don’t lose your place on the page!  And some people are helped by the colors, which reduce the contrast of the black letters on a white page.

Easy-remove Earplugs
Sounds not easily heard by others are often troublesome and highly disturbing, making it difficult to focus. Discreet earplugs help shut out distractions in a socially acceptable manner.

“Learn” Essential Oil
Proprietary blend helps focus and calm

Incredible 5-Point Scale Calming Strategies Card

The Incredible 5-Point Scale was developed by Kari Dunn Buron (K.D. Buron, Incredible 5-Point Scale. Copyright AAPC Publishing. www.aapcpublishing.net. Used with permission). The 5-point scale can be used to help teach a person with ASD to recognize different levels of stress and anxiety. The scale visually breaks down a person’s responses to stress by labeling each level with what the behavior looks like, what the level feels like, and what stress reduction exercise or routines can be used to reduce the stress level. The person with ASD and his caregiver can begin to think in terms of ‘being at’ a level 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5 using the scale as a visual prompt. After much practice and patience, the person can be prompted to bring their stress level down from a 4 to a 2 using the scale as a guide. The 5-point scale is a cognitive behavioral method of teaching the student how to recognize their own internal emotional states and then to practice successful responses to those emotions. We now have published case studies and objective scientific evidence that CBT does significantly reduce mood disorders in children and adults with Asperger’s Syndrome (Attwood. In press).
